How to Clean and Protect Your Alloy Wheels Properly
How to Clean and Protect Your Alloy Wheels Properly
Wheels are arguably the hardest-working part of your car's exterior. Every drive coats them in brake dust, road grime, iron fallout, and tar — and because they run hot, these contaminants bake on and bond deeply. A quick rinse rarely cuts it. Here's how to clean your alloys properly, safely, and without damaging the finish.
Why proper wheel cleaning matters
Brake dust is corrosive. It contains iron particles from brake discs and pads that, if left sitting on your alloy surface, will begin to pit and stain the lacquer over time. You might not notice the damage for months, but by the time it's visible it can be very difficult — and expensive — to reverse.
Regular, thorough wheel cleaning removes contamination before it has a chance to etch in, keeps your alloys looking sharp, and makes each subsequent clean quicker and easier.
Step 1: Rinse first, always
Before applying any product, give your wheels a thorough rinse with a pressure washer or strong hose. This removes loose grit and debris that could scratch the surface during cleaning. Never go straight in with a brush on a dry, dirty wheel.
Rinse each wheel from the top down, getting water into the barrel and behind the spokes where grime builds up heavily.
Step 2: Apply a wheel cleaner
With the wheels rinsed but still wet, apply a dedicated wheel cleaner. For heavily contaminated alloys — especially after winter — an iron-reactive cleaner is the most effective choice. It chemically dissolves the ferrous brake dust that regular cleaners can't shift.
Our Iron Fallout Remover works equally well on wheels as it does on paint — spray it on, watch it turn purple as it reacts with iron contamination, leave it to dwell for 3–5 minutes, then rinse. The colour change is a satisfying confirmation it's doing exactly what it promises.
For general maintenance washes where the contamination isn't as severe, Infinity Wax Powerfoam Snow Foam through a foam lance gives excellent coverage across the whole wheel and tyre at once.
Step 3: Agitate with the right brushes
Chemical cleaners do the heavy lifting, but agitation with a good brush finishes the job — especially in tight spots between spokes and in the barrel.
The Duel Autocare "The Stiff One" Detailing Brush 2-Pack is ideal here. The two sizes — 17cm and 23cm — give you the reach and stiffness to scrub the barrel, spokes, and caliper area without damaging the alloy surface. Work around each spoke methodically, using the smaller brush for tight areas and the larger for the face of the wheel.
Keep the surface wet throughout and rinse your brushes frequently to avoid redistributing grime.
Step 4: Don't forget the tyres
While you're at the wheels, clean the tyres too. Old tyre dressing and browning rubber can make otherwise clean alloys look grubby, and the tyres themselves benefit from a proper clean before any dressing is applied.
A stiff brush and a diluted all-purpose cleaner works well here. Scrub the sidewall in circular motions, rinse, and move on.
Step 5: Rinse thoroughly and dry
Rinse each wheel thoroughly, getting into every area you cleaned. Any cleaner residue left to dry — especially iron removers — can leave marks or cause issues with alloy finishes over time.
Dry the wheels with a dedicated microfibre cloth or use a leaf blower to blast water out of the barrel and gaps between spokes before it dries on.
Step 6: Dress the tyres
Clean, dry tyres are ready for dressing. A good tyre dressing restores the deep black look of new rubber, protects the sidewall from UV cracking and browning, and finishes off the whole wheel area properly.
Browse our range of Tyre Dressings for options ranging from natural satin finishes to high-gloss looks. Apply with an applicator to avoid slinging onto the paintwork.
Step 7: Protect your alloys
Freshly cleaned wheels are the perfect time to apply a wheel sealant. This creates a protective barrier that makes future cleaning significantly easier — brake dust and grime have a much harder time bonding to a sealed surface.
Browse our Wheel Sealants range for long-lasting options. For the ultimate protection, Infinity Wax Synergy Revolution Wheel Ceramic Coating provides 2+ years of protection and can withstand the extreme heat and chemical exposure that wheels endure.
Maintenance tips
Once your wheels are clean and protected, keeping them that way is simple:
- Include wheels in every wash routine — don't leave them until they're heavily contaminated
- Use your Duel Autocare Snow Foam Lance to pre-soak wheels before every contact wash
- Add Duel Autocare FLEX Polymer Sealant to your foam lance mix to top up wheel protection at every wash
